The range of 40 colours are chosen according to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the pigment itself. The resultant colour spectrum ensures the largest number of colours can be mixed.

The Cotman Water Colour range has a more uniform consistency than the Artists’ Water Colour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Water Colour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Artists’ Water Colour range, this enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique.
New Gamboge – pigment change
Originally produced using Gamboge, a coloured gum from the Garcinia plant, Artists’ Water Colour Gamboge was discontinued in 2005, due to its toxic characteristics. Its replacement was a different shade, due to the pigments available and renamed New Gamboge.

Due to the above pigment discontinuation, New Gamboge, in both Professional Water Colour and Cotman, has been reformulated once again and, with advances in pigment technology, the colour is much closer to its original namesake, delivering greater authenticity within the spectrum.

The pigments have changed from Nickel Dioxine PY153 to Quinacridone PR209 & Azo Nickel Complex PY150
