Winsor Blue (Red Shade) is a deep intense blue with a red undertone. It is made from the modern pigment Phthalocyanine which was introduced in the 1930s.

Winsor Blue, otherwise known as Phthalo Blue is a deep, intense blue which approaches black in mass tone and has either a red or green undertone leading to the variations of Winsor Blue (Red Shade) or Winsor Blue (Green Shade). It has great tinting abilities, is transparent and completely permanent. Made from the organic synthetic pigment copper phthalocyanine, which is part of a collection of colours that were first chemically synthesized in the late 1920s, Winsor Blue was one of only three colours that were universally accepted for their artist quality.

The colours are chosen according to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the pigment in water colour, ie. granulating, staining or even wash.
