This fun technique includes Distress Glazes and Distress Crayons, you gotta give it a try!
For this technique I used a 300gsm Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper which I spritzed with water a few times on both side before placing inside my 3D embossing folder and running through my Big Shot Plus machine 3 times. This ensures the paper can stretch and reach the high raised areas without tearing. Running the folder through the machine 3 times, also ensures you get a good embossed image
Next I covered the embossed paper with my Distress Embossing Dabber to give it a good solid covering of clear embossing ink and then I poured over my Distress Embossing Glaze Broken China
Heat set the embossing powder using an embossing gun
Once the embossing powder has set and cooled, cover the entire surface with your Distress Crayons, I used Walnut Stain and Black Soot as I wanted a dramatic effect, but you could also use Picket Fence if you wanted a more shabby chic effect
Using a damp paper towle, wipe off as much or as little of the crayon as you want, to reveal the embossed image underneath. I love this part as the reveal is so dramatic
You really don’t have to seal your project, but as I keep my samples for events and shows etc, I prefer to seal them as I want them to last longer. For this, I almost always choose my Winsor and Newton Gloss Spray Varnish
Cut your image down to size, to fit on your card
Sand the edges to reveal the watercolour paper along the edges
Using a blending tool and Distress Ink Pad Black Soot, ink along the sanded edges to give the piece a nice finished edge
Using double sided tape, mat the embossed image onto a piece of black cardstock
This is one of my favourite techniques!!! Choose a metallic cardstock – colour of your choice. I chose a colour as similar to my embossing glaze as possible
Using an archival ink pad, stamp the text onto the metallic cardstock and sprinkle over an embossing powder colour that is very similar to the colour of the metallic cardstock you have chosen. Ideally a metallic embossing powder would be better here, but as I didn’t have one, I used Wendy Vecchi Garden Patina Embossing Powder. I also find it pretty important to use the anti static pad before stamping here, as I find the embossing powder likes to stick to t he metallic cardstock for some reason
Once you have heat embossed the text, cover the entire embossed piece using your Distress Crayon, Black Soot
Using a damp paper towel, wipe away as much or as little of the crayon as you want. This creates a faux embossed metal effect which I really love!
Mat your embossed text onto some black cardstock
Another great technique using Distress Glaze! Paint your metal corner using a paint brush and Distress Collage Medium Matte and then while the glue is wet, cover with the embossing glaze
Heat set the metal corner. Remember that metal gets extremely hot, so I use my tweezers when holding the piece to heat set it. Allow to cool completely before the next step
Once the embossed metal corner has cooled, add distress crayon Black Soot over the top and using a damp paper towel, remove as much or as little of the crayon as you want to reveal the embossed detail on the metal corner. I LOVE that you can tint metal embellishments with the glaze!
I added a little Black Soot crayon over my nail head and wiped off any excess
Another cool technique for the Distress Glazes, is using them to tint your Baseboard Dolls! Use a clear embossing pen to colour in the areas of the doll you wish to tint, then pour over the embossing glaze and heat set
Remember that the colour on the baseboard doll will always impact the colour of the glaze. This doll had a slightly frayed burlap coloured suit, so the distress glaze has a slightly more greenish appearance
My Wendy Vecchi mini Make Art Stay-tion is a go to for me! I love it, especially when making cards – it’s just the perfect size! I use the mini stay-tion to line up my sentiment and adhere using Distress Collage Medium. Another trick here, is to use the magnets to hold the sentiment in place until the glue has dried
Using double sided tape and a little Distress Collage Medium Matte for extra strength, add the tinted baseboard doll
Attach the glazed photo corner – I also use a little Distress Collage Medium Matte even though the corner bends over the cardstock
Such a simply card topper, but so effective!
