Use Non-Porous Surfaces: Alcohol inks work best on non-porous surfaces like glossy paper, Yupo paper, metal, glass, or ceramic. Experiment with different surfaces for varied effects.
Start with a Clean Surface: Ensure your working surface is clean and free from any debris or oils to prevent interference with the ink’s adhesion.
Work in a Well-Ventilated Area: Alcohol inks contain solvents, so it’s essential to work in a well-ventilated space to avoid inhaling fumes. Never spray alcohol inks or blending solution!
Mixing Inks: Create custom colours by mixing different shades of alcohol ink directly on your surface or on a palette. You can blend colours together using a brush, felt applicator, or by dripping one colour into another.
Use Blending Solution: Ranger also offers a blending solution specifically designed for alcohol inks. It can be used to lighten colours, blend edges, and create interesting effects like marbling or lifting.
Experiment with Tools: Explore various tools like brushes, palette knives, or air blowers to manipulate the ink and create different textures and patterns.
Layering: Build up layers of ink to add depth and dimension to your artwork. Allow each layer to dry completely before adding the next layer to prevent colours from mixing too much.
Masking Techniques: Use masking techniques with tape, stencils, or masking fluid to create defined areas or patterns within your artwork.
Adding Metallics: Mix alcohol inks with metallic mixatives or apply them directly on top of dried alcohol ink for a shimmering metallic effect.
Practice and Experiment: Alcohol inks offer a wide range of possibilities, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try out different techniques to discover what works best for you and your artistic style. Practice will help you develop your skills and create stunning alcohol ink creations.
