Distress Glaze: Resist Roses Card Topper

Embossing as a resist is not a new technique, but works just as beautifully with glazes, so be sure to give it a try!

I used Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper 300gsm for this card topper
When using a big background stamp that fills almost my entire piece of cardstock, I like to use Sticky Grid on my stamping platform as this replaces the magnets and holds the paper in place for stamping
I used the Roses stamp set CMS298 with clear embossing ink and the Tattered Rose Distress Embossing Glaze
Once you have heat set the glaze and it has cooled, you can add a background colour of your choice, I wanted a more vintage look to this card, so I chose Ground Espresso. I think that a darker colour ink works better as it gives a better contrast
As I wanted a variation in colour I also added some Frayed Burlap ink (one of my favourite colours in the Distress line). I blended the 2 colours together over the embossed image using blending tools
I sprayed some water droplets onto the cardstock and dabbed with a paper towel to get a more organic, aged looking background
Next I cut my card to size
I like to distress the edges of my vintage pieces as I feel it gives it a more aged effect
I added some Antique Linen ink to the distressed edges
And matted the piece onto some cardstock
If you haven’t tried the Sizzix Impresslits, then I suggest you give them a go! They cut and 3D Emboss at the same time! I cut this flourish out of my hot pressed watercolour paper too.
I used my Distress Embossing Dabber to coat the flourish with embossing ink and added Tattered Rose Embossing Glaze over the surface and heat set it.
Then I covered the entire piece with Ground Espresso Distress Crayon, being sure to fill in all the recessed areas
Using a slightly damp paper towel, I removed some of the crayon. You can remove as much or as little as you prefer. I always love this reveal as it is so dramatic
Then I stamped a birthday sentiment from a Penny Black Stamp set onto some dark brown cardstock and embossed it with Tea Rose Embossing Powder
Then I matted the sentiment onto a lighter piece of cardstock
Yup… my favourite tool for lining up my card toppers! The mini Wendy Vecchi Make Art Stay-tion! The magnets also assist in holding down the elements until the glue has dried
I added some sparkle to the mini flowers and some to the bottom right hand corner of the sentiment using my Pick Me Up Tool
Embossing as a resist – one of my favourite techniques!
